Roing, May 27: Forest Officials of Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary rescued a Pangolin and a 14-ft long Burmese Rock Python from different parts of Roing Township and successfully released them back into the wild.
The Department thanked responsible citizens Sika Pulu, a resident of Roing and Taba Otu, a student of ITI Roing who informed and helped in the rescue of the animals.
In last two months, the Animal Rescue Centre cum Mini Zoo Roing under Mehao WLS has also successfully rescued two orphan bear cubs (Asiatic Black) and a Checkered Keelback water snake (non-venomous). While the snake after confirmed identification was released into the wild, the two bear cubs were sent to CBRC Pakke Tiger Reserve for re-wildling course of several months for their rehabilitation back into the wild.
The Rapid Response Team of Mehao WLS was led by Dr. Kabuk Lego, RFO.
The increasing trend of wildlife rescue and human-animal conflict cases underscores the stress on both natural habitats and human communities attributed to habitat fragmentation, increasing urbanisation and climate change. Thus, the role of citizens, students, community-based organisations become very significant as stewards, ambassadors and support for their local environment, participating in conservation efforts, spreading awareness and collaboration between communities and authorities.
