NAHARLAGUN, Feb 18: In a major breakthrough, police recovered sixteen high-end vehicles from multiple locations in Naharlagun under the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR) in connection with a large-scale vehicle fraud racket.
Superintendent of Police, Naharlagun, Nyelam Nega informed that the recovery was carried out by a team led by SDPO Rishi Longdo after a case was registered at Naharlagun Police Station against Rupjyoti Das (38), a resident of Dathgaon, Guwahati, under Sections 318(4) and 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Das is currently in police custody.
The seized fleet includes a Toyota Fortuner, seven Mahindra Scorpio S11s, two Mahindra XUV300s, two Kia Seltos, one Maruti Brezza, one Hyundai Creta, one Maruti Jimny, and one Mahindra Bolero — all premium and high-demand vehicles.
According to investigators, the accused allegedly impersonated a cluster head of HSBC Bank and falsely claimed that the vehicles were sourced through legitimate bank e-auctions. To gain credibility, he reportedly took around 71 vehicles on rent from Assam and paid initial instalments before fraudulently selling more than 40 of them to unsuspecting buyers in Arunachal Pradesh, promising to provide original documents at a later stage.
Police said the recovered vehicles have either been handed over to Assam Police or returned to their rightful owners after completing due legal formalities. Efforts are ongoing to trace additional vehicles and identify more victims linked to the scam.
SP Nega has urged the public to exercise caution and verify ownership records and transaction documents with transport authorities, banks, and police before purchasing vehicles or entering into financial dealings to avoid falling prey to such fraudulent schemes.
