ITANAGAR, Jul 8: The Siang Indigenous Farmers Forum (SIFF), along with representatives from the Dibang Resistance and North East Human Rights, vehemently opposed the proposed 11,000 MW Upper Siang Multipurpose Storage Project (USMP) in Arunachal Pradesh.
Speaking to the media, a member from SIFF Adv, Tagori Mize stated that they express unified opposition to the proposed 11,000 MW dam on the Siang River, while citing sustainability and environmental impact as primary concerns, noting the delicate ecosystems and biodiversity at risk due to existing hydroelectric projects in the region.
‘The recent Teesta dam incident in Sikkim, which caused downstream floods in Assam, was highlighted as a cautionary tale regarding the potential risks associated with large-scale hydroelectric projects. The forum also criticized the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) for what they termed as negligence towards environmental and social impacts.
"Climate change and the vulnerability of glacial lakes further exacerbate our concerns," added forum members. They emphasized the region's susceptibility to climate-induced changes, exacerbated by projects like the Dibang Multi-Purpose Dam and Etalin Hydro Project. The forum stressed the need for sustainable development practices that respect Arunachal Pradesh's biodiversity hotspots and support local livelihoods.
"We urge the government to consider alternatives such as solar and wind energy," urged forum representatives. They called for amendments to the Arunachal Pradesh State Hydropower Policy 2008 to prioritize community interests over corporate profit.
Further, the forum also made a sincere appeal to the Government of India to reconsider its support for further dams in Arunachal Pradesh. They requested urgent dialogue to address their concerns and explore sustainable energy solutions that align with the state's unique ecological context.
Meanwhile, the forums also condemned the detention of Human Rights Activist and Anti-Dam Activists Ebo Mili and Dugge Apang, Convenor of the Siang Indigenous Farmers’ Forum.
