ITANAGAR/JONAI, Jul 15: Tensions flared along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border today as thousands of protesters led by the Takam Mishing Porin Kébang (TMPK), Mishing Mimag Kébang (MMK), and Takam Mishing Mimé Kébang (TMMK), staged a massive protest demanding justice for Prabhas Doley and Sankar Pegu, both victims of recent violent incidents.
The public outrage follows the July 13 shooting incident at 6th Mile, Roing (Lower Dibang Valley), in which Sankar Pegu (30) from Assam’s Biswanath District was allegedly shot by Tadar Bhai (32) from Arunachal Pradesh. Pegu later succumbed to his injuries at TRIHMS, Naharlagun, on July 14.
Protesters blocked key stretches of the National Highway connecting Assam and Arunachal Pradesh from Jonai to Banderdewa, demanding immediate arrest and strict punishment for all involved in both incidents. Placards with slogans like “Justice for Prabhas and Sankar”, “Stop Cross-Border Violence”, and “We Want Accountability” were seen throughout the day-long agitation.
Meanwhile, in a significant development, protest leaders have temporarily withdrawn the blockade following interventions from the Chief Ministers of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, who have both assured speedy and unbiased investigations.
The Mishing organizations have urged authorities from both states to ensure the safety of citizens in border areas and prevent the recurrence of such tragedies. Protesters are also demanding inter-state coordination mechanisms, better policing, and compensation to the victims’ families.
