Namsai, Aug 28: The Department of Agriculture, Namsai District in collaboration with Patanjali Foods Ltd. organised a Mega Oil Palm Plantation Programme in Chongkham. The event was attended by farmers, officials, and dignitaries with the objective of creating awareness and promoting oil palm cultivation under the National Mission on Edible Oils–Oil Palm (NMEO-OP).
Speaking on the occasion, local MLA Chau Zingnu Namchoom highlighted about NMEO-OP and he said that oil palm and turmeric have been identified as the most suitable crops for Namsai’s fertile soil based on satellite mapping. Emphasizing that India remains dependent on edible oil imports, he urged farmers to take advantage of the policy to ensure self-sufficiency for the nation. He assured that he would take up the issue of timely release of farmer incentives to the competent authority.
Nang Koliani Namchoom, i/c DC also highlighted about NMEO-OP and assured farmers that grievances would be promptly addressed.
Tapas Kumar Tripathi, DGM, Patanjali Foods Ltd. explained why oil palm has been chosen as a flagship crop. He stated that Arunachal alone requires 18,000 metric tonnes of edible oil annually, while per capita consumption remains lower than the national average. With oil palm’s higher yield and efficiency, farmers can take up oil palm farming.
The event marked another significant step toward promoting oil palm as a sustainable and profitable crop in Arunachal Pradesh, with Namsai being among the 10 districts identified for cultivation.
