Sona stresses on holistic education to truly nurture future generations
Deomali, Jul 29: The Forest Department of Deomali Range, Tirap District has reported a tragic incident involving a wild elephant attack resulting in the death of a local resident.
On the night of July 28, a wild elephant entered the residence of the deceased, Dhiren Tati, a 46-year-old tea garden laborer and his son of Diven Tati, in Aghuripather, located between Namsang and Deomali. According to eyewitness accounts, the elephant pulled the man through a window while he was asleep and trampled him to death. The elephant also caused significant damage to the house.
Forest personnel from the Deomali Forest Range responded promptly upon receiving the information the next day. Upon arrival, it was found that the burial ceremony had already been conducted. Evidence collected from the site, including photographs, the condition of the house, the fresh burial site, and elephant dung, corroborates the occurrence of the incident.
This marks the second human fatality due to wild elephant attacks in the Deomali area this month and the third within the past year, indicating a disturbing trend of increasing human-elephant conflicts in the region.
The Forest Department has urged residents to remain vigil and report any elephant sightings immediately. Efforts are underway to monitor elephant movements and implement measures to mitigate such conflicts, it said.
