ITANAGAR Jan 23: The second edition of the Tawangchu Tides International Kayaking Championship (TTIKC) is set to take place from February 10 to 15, in Kharung and Bongleng villages of Tawang district, Arunachal Pradesh, promising an even bigger, bolder and more competitive showcase of international white-water kayaking.
Organised with the support of the Government of Arunachal Pradesh, the championship will be held on the fast, technical and electrifying waters of the Tawangchu , known for its Class IV+ rapids and world-class terrain. Following the success of its inaugural edition, TTIKC has now been officially included in the state’s annual sporting calendar for the next five years, till 2030.
The event is being conducted under the leadership of Chief Minister Pema Khandu, in association with the Indian Kayaking & Canoeing Association (IKCA), Arunachal Kayaking Canoeing and Rafting Association (AKCRA) and the Arunachal Olympic Association (AOA), informed Race Director Charanjit Singh.
The six-day championship will witness participation from nearly 100 kayakers from India and 10 countries, including strong local representation with over 15 kayakers from Arunachal Pradesh. Competitive events will include Downriver Sprint, Kayak Slalom and Kayak Cross for both men and women.
With a total prize purse of USD 18,500 (approximately ₹16.5 lakh), TTIKC boasts India’s largest white-water kayaking prize pool, including exclusive awards for Indian and Arunachali paddlers,stated Singh.
Highlighting its long-term impact, General Secretary - AKCRA N. Dai informed that, Safety arrangements will be managed by dedicated TTIKC safety kayaking teams following international protocols, with additional support from NDRF. He also added that, TTIKC plays a vital role in talent identification and Olympic development. The journey of Devi Daa, discovered at the inaugural TTIKC and later selected for the ICF-IKCA Talent Identification Program and World Championship in Germany, underscores the championship’s significance. Aligned with Olympics 2036, TTIKC aims to build a sustainable high-performance kayaking ecosystem in Arunachal Pradesh.
