Itanagar, Jun 27: Anger and anguish echoed through the streets of Itanagar on Thursday as hundreds of workers and concerned citizens joined a solidarity foot march demanding justice for 22-year-old Prabhas Doley, a labourer from Assam who was brutally murdered at a construction site in Chimpu on June 18.
The march, organized by the Arunachal Pradesh Building and Other Construction Workers Union (APB&OCWU) in collaboration with the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) Arunachal Pradesh unit and its allied organizations, began at Akash Deep and culminated at the Tennis Court in the capital. The rally witnessed strong participation from construction workers, trade unionists, and civil society groups, all united in their call for justice and accountability.
Carrying placards and chanting slogans, the demonstrators condemned the killing and demanded immediate and decisive action. Emotions ran high as union leaders decried the incident as a grave injustice not only to Doley and his family but also to the entire working-class community.
At the heart of their demands was an appeal for immediate compensation to be granted to the bereaved family of the deceased, many of whom rely solely on daily wages for survival. The protesters also called for strict and exemplary punishment for those involved in the crime, urging the state police to expedite the investigation and ensure that the culprits are swiftly brought to justice.
“This is not just a demand for justice for one individual. This is a demand for the safety, dignity, and rights of every worker in this state,” said one of the union leaders addressing the gathering. He further urged the government to implement stronger protective measures for workers, especially those employed in vulnerable sectors like construction.
