ITANAGAR, Sep 11: In a shocking incident that has raised concerns about the safety of healthcare workers, two doctors on duty at the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) were brutally attacked by a 28-year-old man on Thursday morning. The incident occurred in the ENT ward of the state’s only medical college. The attacker, reportedly unhappy with the treatment provided to a patient known to him, assaulted Dr. Arvind Pusha, senior resident of the paediatric department, by hitting him from behind with an iron rod and then repeatedly punching and kicking him. When Dr. Tam Tariang intervened, he was also injured by the attacker with a sharp weapon.
The attacker fled the ward following intervention from on-duty nurses who raised an alarm amidst chaos and panic. Both doctors are receiving treatment at the facility. The accused has been arrested based on a complaint filed by Chief Medical Superintendent Dr. Dukhum Raina at Naharlagun Police Station. Authorities have launched an investigation into the case.
Following the brutal incident, all medical fraternity protested against the assault and refused to execute their duties.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Biyuram Wahge rushed to the TRIHMS and held an emergency meeting. While condemning the attack, he met with the TRIHMS Medical Association to discuss safeguarding healthcare workers. “Violence against those who dedicate their lives to serve others in good faith cannot be tolerated,” he told reporters, promising strict action and protective measures.
Meanwhile, in response to the attack, several healthcare organizations—including the TRIHMS Faculty Association (TFA), the Indian Medical Association Arunachal Pradesh Branch (IMA:AP), the Arunachal Pradesh Doctors Association (APDA), and the Trained Nurses’ Association of India – Arunachal Pradesh Branch (TNAI-AP)—have announced a 48-hour shutdown of all hospital services, both government and private, across the state starting from 8:00 AM on September 12. This is the first phase of their protest against the violent assault. The associations have also submitted a memorandum to the state government seeking urgent resolution of long-pending issues to create a safer and more supportive work environment for healthcare professionals. Emergency services, however, will continue to operate, as per the press statement.
