ITANAGAR, Jun 16: In a dramatic political development that could reshape Arunachal Pradesh’s legislative dynamics, four sitting MLAs from the National People's Party (NPP) have officially switched allegiance to the People's Party of Arunachal (PPA) — the state’s lone regional political outfit.
The shift was confirmed through a bulletin issued by the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly, published in the official state gazette on Monday. The bulletin cites Rule 4 of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly (Disqualification on Ground of Defection) Rules, 1987, under which the legislators submitted Form-III on May 12, 2025, formally declaring their new political affiliation.
The four MLAs who made the switch are: Namgey Tsering (2-Tawang AC), Pesi Jilen (27-Liromoba AC, Tapi Darang (38-Pasighat East AC), and Oni Panyang (40-Mariyang-Geku AC).
All four were elected on NPP tickets during the state elections held in May 2024.
The official notification, jointly signed by Assembly Speaker Tesam Pongte and Assembly Secretary Tadar Meena, recognizes the move and marks a significant gain for the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA), which has been striving to reassert its relevance in the state’s political sphere.
The defection is expected to have far-reaching implications on party equations ahead of key legislative sessions, potentially bolstering regionalist voices and altering the balance of power in the Assembly.
With the merger of four MLAs, PPA now has a total of six(6) MLAs in the state assembly, including Nabam Vivek from Doimukh AC and Oken Tayeng from Mebo AC.
