UA Minister inspects burial ground, focuses on maintenance and improvement

ITANAGAR/NAMSAI, Feb 4 : In the wake of the tragic tiger attack that claimed the life of a police personnel Chiksen Mangpang from Manfiseng, Namsai District at Mayodia in Lower Dibang Valley, Chief Minister Pema Khandu has expressed deep grief over the unfortunate incident and conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein also expressed anguish over the incident and strongly questioned the role of the Forest Department, stating that videos of a tiger moving along the highway had been circulating for several weeks prior to the attack. He remarked that timely action, including advisories for commuters and preventive measures, could have saved a precious life.
Condemning what he termed as gross negligence, the Deputy Chief Minister called for immediate public advisories, swift tranquillisation and relocation of the animal, and strict accountability from the concerned department.
Responding to allegations of negligence, Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change (DoEF&CC), Wangki Lowang, stated that the incident should not be prematurely termed as negligence, as such incident of sighting wild animals in wildlife sanctuary are frequent. However, he assured that action would be taken if any lapses by officials are found.
Calling the incident along the Roing–Mayodia road in the Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary deeply unfortunate, Lowang expressed profound sorrow over the loss of human life and extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased. He informed that immediate steps have been initiated, including deployment of expert veterinary teams and wildlife specialists to the site, mobilisation of STPF guards and field staff for ground support, constitution of a technical expert committee for continuous monitoring, and granting permission for the safe capture and rehabilitation of the animal as per national protocols.
The minister further stated that the department has initiated the process for ex-gratia assistance of `10 lakh to the bereaved family, along with extended institutional support at the district level.
Meanwhile, the Tai Khamti Singpho Council (TKSC), along with student organisations including Tai Khampti Youth Organisation (TKYO), All Namsai Area Youth Association (ANAYA), All Tai Khampti Singpho Students’ Union (ATKSSU), and the All Namsai District Students’ Union, strongly condemned the Forest Department for alleged negligence. The organisations have urged the state government to institute a judicial inquiry into the incident, provide `50 lakh compensation, and ensure a regular government job for a family member of the deceased.
