ANINI, Jun 6: In the aftermath of devastating floods triggered by the Talo River on May 31 and June 2 last, the Dibang Valley District witnessed a swift and coordinated rescue and relief operation in the severely affected Athunli village under Etalin Circle.
The floodwaters caused extensive damage, eroding over 40,000 square metres of land and impacting several households, agricultural fields, fish ponds, and key infrastructure such as hanging bridges. Fortunately, no loss of human life was reported. However, six individuals were left stranded at Mawali village as water levels continued to rise, cutting off access to essential supplies, stated a release.
Responding to the crisis, the district administration swiftly activated a multi-agency Incident Response Team (IRT), led by Deputy Commissioner Pagli Sora and Superintendent of Police Manish Shaurya. The team comprised personnel from the Indian Army, Arunachal Pradesh Police, Border Roads Organisation (BRO), and District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA).
The IRT reached the affected area on June 4 and immediately began relief operations. With the assistance of local villagers, essential food items were transported using an MS wire rope cable. A reconnaissance team led by DDMA official Kabang Lego managed to reach the stranded villagers and laid a nylon rope to facilitate emergency aid delivery. The Indian Army further supported the effort by using drone technology to airlift 150 kilograms of rice and essential medicines to the stranded site.
In a parallel effort, the BRO worked tirelessly to clear more than five road blockages that had initially hampered access to the affected area. Their contribution played a crucial role in ensuring that rescue and relief teams could reach those in need without delay. Restoration work on the damaged hanging bridge also began with the laying of a metal rope to re-establish connectivity.
Superintendent of Police Manish Shaurya expressed deep appreciation for the relentless efforts of the police team led by OC Bolok and announced that the team would be suitably rewarded for their exceptional service. The Anini Police, along with the district administration, also extended heartfelt gratitude to the Indian Army, BRO, and all supporting agencies for their prompt and dedicated response.
