NEW DELHI, Feb 25: Delhi Police on Wednesday arrested Ruby Jain and Harsh Singh in connection with the alleged racial abuse and criminal intimidation of three women from Arunachal Pradesh in Malviya Nagar.
The case stems from a February 20 altercation between neighbours after dust from the installation of an air conditioner unit allegedly fell into the apartment of the accused. What began as a minor dispute reportedly escalated into a heated confrontation, during which the three women were allegedly subjected to racial slurs and sexually suggestive threats.
A video of the incident that surfaced online purportedly shows the accused woman making derogatory remarks targeting the victims’ Northeastern identity.
An FIR was registered on February 23 at Malviya Nagar Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. During further investigation, provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act were also invoked based on material available on record. Police stated that the investigation is being supervised by an ACP-rank officer and that a chargesheet will be filed at the earliest.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed the arrests, stating that the woman accused of insulting and abusing the “three Arunachalee girls” had been taken into custody and that the male accused had also been booked. He assured that stringent legal action would follow.
Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta met the three young women on Wednesday, expressing solidarity and assuring full support. In a statement shared on social media, she described the students as “resilient, courageous and full of promise,” emphasizing that Delhi stands for diversity, dignity, and mutual respect.
Gupta underscored that hatred, discrimination, and intimidation would not be tolerated and urged the public not to politicise the issue, while respecting the privacy of the victims.
