ITANAGAR, June 3: The death toll from relentless rainfall-triggered flash floods and landslides in Arunachal Pradesh has climbed to 12, according to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA). The latest fatalities were reported from Lohit and Anjaw districts.
East Kameng remains the worst-affected district with seven reported deaths, followed by Lower Subansiri with two. One fatality each has been confirmed in Longding, Lohit, and Anjaw districts.
In Anjaw, 38-year-old labourer Maz Bhaben Murmu lost his life on June 1 after a wall collapsed due to a landslide. The incident report was delayed but later confirmed by the SDMA. Meanwhile, in Lohit district, Guptajit Bharali, a resident of Jania in Barpeta, Assam, was swept away while attempting to cross the flooded Sukha Nallah near Danglat village in Upper Digaru on May 31. His body was recovered the following day near Lasa Pani.
Flash floods and landslides have affected a total of 23 districts across the state, including Upper Siang, Anjaw, Papum Pare, East Kameng, Kurung Kumey, West Kameng, Kra Daadi, Changlang, Dibang Valley, Lohit, Lower Dibang Valley, Kamle, Longding, Shi Yomi, Bichom, Tawang, Lower Subansiri, Upper Subansiri, West Siang, Tirap, Pakke Kessang, Itanagar Capital Complex (ICC), and Namsai.
According to the SDMA report, 989 people have been impacted, with 162 villages affected. The disaster has also led to the death of 335 poultry birds, 30 small animals, and 60 large animals.
Rescue and relief operations are underway, with 18 individuals evacuated from the worst-affected areas. Three relief camps have been set up, currently sheltering 239 displaced residents.
In addition, social media reports highlight a major rescue operation along the Trans Arunachal Highway (TAH), where over 70 people stranded in Kayi Panyor and Kamle districts due to landslides and road blockages were rescued by personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local police, and community volunteers.
