YINGKIONG, Feb 22:

Deputy Commissioner Upper Siang, Remo Kamki in a coordination meeting held on Tuesdayexpressed concern over increased inflow of opium and ganja products into the district in the wake of Poppy destruction drive conducted last year by the District Administration in collaboration with ABK Women Wing, Upper Siang Unit.

The DC observed that trafficking of opium and ganja products imported to the district may be done through Tata Sumo and other private vehicles. In this regard necessary directives have been issued to the administrative officers and Police station of Yingkiong, Geku and Mariyang for regular and surprise checking at vital locations. Keeping in view the shortage of police personnel, ABK Women Wing have been allowed to carry out surprise checking of commercial and suspicious vehicles and persons at Gobuk, Simong, Geku and Yingkiong Township.

The DC further added that there is an urgent need for assistance and cooperation from NGOs  and elite groups of society to effectively tackle the Opium and drug menace.

The house further resolved to carry out destruction drive of poppy plants at Mariyang and Katan areas in the first week of March.

It is learnt that poppy cultivation is mostly done in inaccessible areas of Damro, Adi-Pasi, Silli, Padu, Sumsing and Pongging areas for fear of destructions. More about eleven hectares of poppy plants were destroyed last year. DIPRO
