TAWANG, Sep 16: A 46-year-old Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) employee of the Tawang Post Office has been arrested in connection with the alleged misappropriation of government funds amounting to ₹39.25 lakh, police said.
The alleged financial irregularity came to light during a verification conducted at the Tawang Post Office on September 7 by H Nilamai Singh, Inspector of Post Office, Bomdila Postal Sub-Division.
Based on the findings, a written complaint was submitted to Tawang Police Station on September 13, alleging that one Sangeeta Ale, an MTS employee, had failed to account for government funds totalling ₹39,25,211.
According to the complaint, the largest portion of the alleged shortage—₹34,49,369—related to Postal Life Insurance (PLI) and Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI) premiums collected between January 1, 2023, and May 31, 2024. The amount was allegedly neither accounted for nor produced despite repeated reminders.
Another ₹4,75,842 was allegedly found to be unremitted counter cash, police said.
During the verification, Ale was reportedly questioned about the discrepancy and allegedly admitted to the shortage. Police said she subsequently furnished a written statement and undertaking in which she allegedly acknowledged the misappropriation of government funds.
Following the complaint, Tawang Police registered a case and launched an investigation into the alleged financial irregularities. The investigation is being headed by Lady Inspector Nii Angu, Officer-in-Charge of Tawang Police Station.
Police said Ale was arrested on September 14 after completion of the required legal formalities and has been remanded to police custody.
Further investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged misappropriation and to trace and recover the missing funds, police said.
