New Delhi, Jun 6: In a move set to transform connectivity in Arunachal Pradesh’s remote frontier, Tourism Minister P.D. Sona met with Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha to push for daily fixed-wing flights to Mechuka under the Government of India’s UDAN scheme.
Currently dependent on limited helicopter services that don’t operate in all weather conditions, Mechuka remains largely inaccessible during large parts of the year. The Minister emphasized the urgency of dependable, year-round connectivity to benefit the local population and unlock the tourism potential of the region.
“We are committed to improving the infrastructure and connectivity in Mechuka. A daily flight to Itanagar will not only enhance the lives of locals but also promote tourism in the region. We look forward to working with the Civil Aviation Department to make this a reality,” said Sona.
Acting on the Minister’s request, the Civil Aviation Secretary directed Sankesh Mehta, Director, Civil Aviation, to engage with airlines and initiate the bidding process for the Mechuka-Itanagar route under the UDAN scheme. Sona assured full state support for the proposal, including infrastructure and administrative facilitation.
The meeting also addressed the pending clearance of the Mechuka Civil Terminal. DDG BCAS, IPS Pratibha Ambedkar, assured the matter would be taken up on priority to expedite the process.
If approved, the move will mark a landmark moment for Arunachal’s civil aviation landscape, bringing one of its most strategically located regions closer to the national mainstream.
