ITANAGAR, Jan 13: In a decisive move to curb unfair trade practices and protect consumer rights, the Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Affairs (LM&CA), conducted a routine inspection at the Itanagar market area on Tuesday.
The inspection was led by Mige Kamki, Secretary, Legal Metrology & Consumer Affairs, along with Dr Debia Tana, District Consumer Protection Officer (DCPO)-cum-Assistant Controller, Inspectors Tao Tasar (Naharlagun) and Tarh Sonu (Itanagar), supported by departmental staff.
The drive focused on price regulation, verification of weights and measures, and compliance with statutory provisions under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, and the Arunachal Pradesh Legal Metrology (Enforcement) Rules, 2011. Officials verified packaging standards, labeling norms, and the accuracy of weighing instruments used by traders.
During the inspection, the department booked six traders for using unverified weights and measures under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, and three traders for selling non-standard packaged commodities in violation of the Packaged Commodities Rules, 2011.
Officials reiterated that the exercise is part of the state government’s ongoing effort to ensure transparency in commercial transactions, check rising market prices, and safeguard consumer trust.
Advising traders to strictly adhere to amended legal provisions to avoid penalties, Mige Kamki also urged consumers to remain vigilant and informed about their rights under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, in the larger interest of fair trade and public welfare.
The department affirmed that such inspections will continue regularly to ensure fair market practices and consumer protection across the state, stated a press release.
