ROING, Jul 11: A wave of shock and unrest has gripped Roing Town, after a 19-year-old rape accused was lynched by a mob, prompting the closure of the town’s main market for the second day in a row. The administration has invoked a Curfew in the city to prevent any further escalation of violence.
The alleged accused, who was identified as Riaz-Ul Kurim, a migrant worker from Assam’s Bongaigaon district, had been arrested by police after parents of several minor girls—aged between six and eight—lodged complaints of sexual assault. Kurim was booked under the stringent POCSO Act.
The situation escalated dramatically on Friday when news of the alleged assaults spread rapidly through the community. In a shocking turn of events, a furious mob stormed the Roing police station, broke open the lock-up, and dragged Kurim out, subjecting him to a violent assault. Police managed to temporarily rescue him and rushed him to the district hospital for treatment. However, as the crowd outside the hospital grew larger and more aggressive, they overpowered the security forces, broke into the hospital, and lynched Kurim.
Superintendent of Police Ringu Ngupok, speaking to media, confirmed that law and order have now been brought under control. He informed that the police have registered two cases and all those involved in the incident are under the ambit of the investigation which will take place as per laid down laws.” The police has assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway, both into the allegations of sexual assault and the mob violence that followed.
