ITANAGAR, June 19: In his first public statement after taking charge as the new President of the Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), former Minister and veteran Congress leader Bosiram Siram extended an open invitation to former political leaders, party workers and the public, urging them to "come back to Congress" and be part of a stronger, people-centric political movement.
Addressing the contentious Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP) issue, Siram made it clear that the Congress party is not against development or dams, but strongly oppose mega dam projects that displace indigenous communities, submerge ancestral lands, and threaten traditional livelihoods.
“Build ten dams on the Siang River if you must—but let them be small, sustainable, and run-of-the-river type. We welcome technology and power development, but not at the cost of our people’s survival,” he asserted.
Siram also raised serious concerns over the appointments of Chairmen and Vice-Chairmen to various boards and corporations by the state government. While he clarified he isn’t against such appointments, he cautioned that these posts must not become mere ornamental designations.
“There should be clear guidelines and accountability so that these institutions contribute to actual development and don’t become platforms to promote corruption,” Siram said.
He concluded his address by thanking the Congress High Command for reposing faith in him and vowed to revitalize the party at the grassroots.
