ITANAGAR, Sep 30: In a significant breakthrough towards peace and normalcy, three active cadres of the proscribed outfit United Tani Army (UTA) voluntarily laid down their arms and surrendered before authorities at the Police Headquarters (PHQ) in Itanagar on Tuesday.
The surrendered cadres have been identified as: Miss Jonali Basumatary – Corporal, Jummik Riba – Lieutenant / Finance Secretary, Sengseng Thowmoung – Sergeant Major / Area Commander (Eastern Arunachal).
The formal surrender ceremony was attended by Home Minister Mama Natung, MLA cum Advisor to Home Minister Mutchu Mithi, DGP, and other senior police officials and dignitaries.
Addressing the media after the ceremony, the Home Minister hailed the development as a major stride towards restoring peace and stability in the state. He appealed to all “misguided youths” still involved in underground activities to shun violence, return to the mainstream, and contribute to the state’s inclusive growth.
“The decision of these cadres to surrender reflects the collective will for harmony and development. The government is fully committed to ensuring rehabilitation, dignity, and opportunities for all who renounce violence and embrace the path of peace,” Natung stated.
The Home Minister also lauded the state police and ICR police personnel for their proactive and persistent efforts that persuaded the UTA cadres to abandon arms and reintegrate into society. He further informed that all surrendered cadres, including those who laid down their weapons today, are under investigation and will be placed under a government-run rehabilitation programme as per the prescribed guidelines.
