BOLENG, Oct 3: After more than 15 hours of intense and continuous rescue efforts, the body of Uma Shankar (32), a tourist from Bihar who tragically slipped into the Siang-Yamne river gorge, has been located but not yet retrieved due to extremely challenging terrain and weather conditions.
Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the local police, aided by villagers, have been working tirelessly since Thursday evening to recover the body from the steep and treacherous gorge.
According to Anup Kumar, a friend of the deceased, Shankar had climbed a rock near the Pongging viewpoint while his companions stopped at a nearby vendor to purchase bananas to break a 10-day fast. Tragically, he slipped and plunged into the gorge below. His friends immediately informed authorities, prompting a swift response from a joint SDRF-police rescue team.
Although the team successfully located the body early this morning, retrieval operations remain highly complex due to the steep slopes, rugged terrain, and unfavourable weather conditions. Officials confirmed that efforts will resume at first light on Saturday to bring the body up safely.
Meanwhile, the victim’s family has appealed to authorities for the immediate recovery of Shankar’s body so that final rites can be performed.
Local administration has assured the family that all possible efforts are being made to complete the operation as soon as possible.
