Mago, Aug 6: A farmers’ awareness cum technology demonstration programme for the benefit of tribal yak herders was conducted today at Chuna Grazing Ground, Mago. The event was jointly organized by the ICAR-National Research Centre on Yak (NRC-Yak), Dirang, in collaboration with the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, Tawang, and the Indian Army under the aegis of the Baisakhi Brigade.
The programme witnessed the presence of several dignitaries including ADC Jang, Hakraso Kri, Brigadier Rahul Mishra, Commander Baisakhi Brigade, Commanding Officer, Mago Battalion, Assistant Commissioner Thingbu, Thutan Wangchu, DVO Tawang, Dr. Avang Tamin, Principal Scientist, NRC-Yak Dr. Dinamani Medhi, senior scientists, departmental officials, and villagers from Mago and Luguthang.
A total of 125 Brokpas (traditional yak herders) participated and benefitted from the programme.
The technical session led by Dr. Dinamani Medhi focused on several topics.
As part of the outreach, various inputs were distributed to the herders which included veterinary medicines, solar lights etc.
Additionally, samples were collected from the field for the SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism) project, aimed at improving genetic research on yak.
This collaborative initiative reflects the commitment of NRC on Yak, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, and the Indian Army to support and empower the tribal yak herding communities in remote high altitude regions.
