Itanagar, Aug 27: The North Eastern Handicrafts & Handlooms Development Corporation Ltd. (NEHHDC), under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), today inaugurated its Authorized Yarn Depot at Khinam Fashion House, Itanagar. The inauguration was led by Mara Kocho, Managing Director, NEHHDC, in the presence of Maling Gombu (Chairman – Arunachal Pradesh Khadi & Village Industries Board), Dorjee Phuntso (Director – Textiles and Handicrafts), local stakeholders, artisans and members of the weaving community.
The newly launched Yarn Depot will provide artisans and weavers of Arunachal Pradesh with direct access to Purbashree Yarn – including Ahimsa Silk and Premium Eri Yarn, certified under OEKO-TEX Standard 100. This initiative is a significant step towards ensuring the availability of quality raw materials, strengthening the handloom value chain, and enhancing the productivity and livelihood opportunities for local weavers.
Speaking at the inauguration, Kocho, emphasised the importance of strengthening the supply chain for the region’s artisans so that there is easy access to quality yarn which is fundamental for artisans and weavers to compete in national and international markets.
The depot is part of NEHHDC’s broader initiative to expand access to Purbashree Yarn across the Northeast, ensuring that artisans can work with authentic, certified, and sustainable materials. The initiative also complements NEHHDC’s efforts to promote sustainable Eri silk, which is eco-friendly, cruelty-free, and globally recognised for its unique texture and quality.
