ITANAGAR, Jun 25: Arunachal Pradesh, Governor Lt. General KT Parnaik (Retd.), participated in the first-ever observance of Samvidhan Hatya Diwas at the DK Convention Centre, Itanagar today.
The Governor in his address reflected on the solemn significance of the day, which marks the 50th anniversary of the imposition of Emergency in India on the midnight of June 25, 1975. Describing it as one of the darkest chapters in the nation’s democratic history, he said the occasion serves as a powerful reminder of the time when the Constitution was suppressed, and citizens’ rights were silenced.
The Governor stressed the importance of observing Samvidhan Hatya Diwas to educate younger generations about the fragility of democratic values and the need for constant vigilance to preserve the Constitution. He noted that the Emergency period was not merely a political event but a complete breakdown of democratic norms. The then government suspended civil liberties and reduced the country to a prison all for the sake of retaining power, he said.
While recalling the three times a National Emergency has been declared in India, during the 1962 war with China, the 1971 war with Pakistan, and the 1975 Emergency due to political instability, the Governor stressed the importance of observing Samvidhan Hatya Diwas to educate younger generations about the fragility of democratic values and the need for constant vigilance to preserve the Constitution.
Paying a heartfelt tribute to Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan, the Governor lauded his unwavering courage and leadership during those difficult times. He said that at the age of 73, in fragile health, JP became the symbol of resistance and hope. His fight for democracy changed the course of Indian history. One man’s conviction reshaped the destiny of 62 crore people, the Governor said. He added that JP’s legacy must be kept alive through public education and continued commitment to democratic values.
Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Tesam Pongte, Minister for Women & Child Development and Cultural Affairs Dasanglu Pul, Chief Secretary Manish Gupta, and Secretary of Art & Culture Mamata Riba also addressed the gathering, sharing their thoughts on the importance of constitutional values.
