ITANAGAR, May 28: In a strongly worded letter addressed to the Chairman of the Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Human Rights, the Arunachal Pradesh Women's Welfare Society (APWWS) has called for an immediate independent inquiry into the alleged assault of women protesters by sitting Minister Ojing Tasing during a recent demonstration.
The incident, which has sparked widespread outrage on social media, reportedly occurred during protests against the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) for a pre-feasibility survey of the proposed 11,500 MW Siang Upper Multipurpose Project on May 27 at Boleng. A viral video circulating online appears to show the Minister elbowing a female protester, while another woman was seen bleeding, allegedly after being manhandled by police.
APWWS President Kani Nada Maling expressed deep concern over what she described as a “grave violation of human rights and dignity of women.”
In her statement, Maling said "Such abuse of power by both elected representatives and law enforcement agencies is highly condemnable. This incident represents a grave violation of constitutional rights and human dignity, particularly of women exercising their fundamental right to peaceful protest."
The Society has urged the Commission to launch a thorough and independent probe and ensure that justice is delivered regardless of rank or position.
In response to the allegations, Minister Ojing Tasing issued a clarification on social media, stating that the situation had turned violent and that he narrowly escaped harm.
"My uncle sustained a grievous head injury. I was also at risk while exiting the venue after a peaceful meeting with the Siang Indigenous Farmers Forum (SIFF)," Tasing said. "Stones were pelted, chilly powder was thrown, and one lady wielded a local knife. I thank my local youths and PSOs for safely escorting me from the mob."
The protests were reportedly organized by locals opposing the dam project, citing environmental and displacement concerns.
