ITANAGAR, Jun 5: In a strong rebuttal to the recent pro-dam resolution, the Adi Students’ Union (AdiSU) on Wednesday held a press conference at Arunachal Press Club (APC), voicing firm opposition to the 35th Pangin BJP Mandal’s support for the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP).
The press conference was convened in direct response to a resolution adopted on June 3 during a coordination meeting chaired by Tani Taki, President of the 35th Pangin BJP Mandal. “In the resolution, the Mandal declared its endorsement of the SUMP as a "National Project" and advocated for the initiation of a pre-feasibility report through senior BJP leadership’ stated Spokesperson AdiSU Dutik Jamoh.
Terming the resolution “anti-people,” AdiSU condemned the Mandal’s unilateral endorsement of the project without grassroots-level consultations. The union warned that the proposed dam poses grave threats to the socio-cultural fabric and ecological integrity of the Siang region—an area deeply intertwined with the identity and livelihood of local indigenous communities.
AdiSU also took strong exception to the Mandal’s suggestion of disciplinary measures against government employees and honorarium recipients who are allegedly participating in anti-dam movements. The union argued that such moves are a blatant violation of democratic rights and an attempt to suppress freedom of expression.
Reiterating its stand, AdiSU asserted ‘ State government should first consult and properly convince villagers about the pros and cons of the said project. Detail Blue print should be tabled before going for PFR, then only villagers can say their words. However, in the present scenario, Govt is imposing Forces, and insisting for PFR, which creates huge objections from all sectors,’ added AdiSU.
Further, expressing its unwavering commitment to protect the rights and interests of indigenous people, the Union demanded an immediate halt to any advancement of the controversial dam project until comprehensive public consultations are held.
