ZIRO, Jan 21: Lower Subansiri district witnessed a complete shutdown today as a 24-hour bandh, spearheaded by the Arunachal ST Bachao Andolan (Lower Subansiri Unit) along with the United Joint Youth Steering Committee, Bamin Michi Youth Association, Siiro Youth Association, and Arunachal Pradesh Indigenous Youth Organisation, brought normal life to a standstill.
The bandh was called in protest against what the organisations claim is the administration’s inaction on repeated demands to demolish an allegedly illegally constructed mosque. According to the organisers, several memorandums and representations have gone unheeded, forcing them to resort to a district-wide shutdown.
Markets, shops, business establishments, and private institutions remained closed, while vehicular movement was thin and public transport largely off the roads. Organisers, however, ensured that essential services, including medical and emergency facilities, continued to operate uninterrupted.
Protest leaders stressed that the bandh aims to draw urgent attention from the state government to what they termed a sensitive issue affecting the rights, identity, and constitutional protections of Arunachal Pradesh’s indigenous tribal communities. They cautioned that if their demands remain unaddressed, the agitation could escalate in the coming days.
The district administration appealed for peace and calm, assuring citizens that the matter is being addressed under the law. Security personnel were deployed at key locations to prevent any untoward incidents.
