India reported the highest single day spike in Omicron cases at 578 on Monday. As worries mount, states have been pushed to bring in night curfews and restrictions as a precautionary measure to contain its spread.
For a world devastated by the highly virulent coronavirus for the past two years, Omicron, the new variant of the SARS-CoV2 is bad news. With good reason the entire globe is anxious and has stepped up measures to curb its spread. Delmicron, a mutation of the Delta and Omicron variants has also been reported. The highly infectious Covid 19 seems to be playing a game with mankind and beating us at it.
Preliminary studies have shown that Omicron though more contagious is less severe than Delta. Experts believe with Omicron, the third wave of coronavirus will hit its peak in February in the country but in a much milder manner than in the second wave.
While this brings some relief, guard must not be lowered.
Living with Covid-19 has now become a part of life though declining cases has brought the much needed relief as a semblance of normalcy returned. Arunachal which faced a comparatively severe second Covid wave than the first is limping back to normalcy. The flat lining cases has also resulted in people lowering their guard. Covid Appropriate Behaviour and SOPs have once again fallen out of practice. The administration must once again begin reminding people to exercise the protocols which have proved effective in the earlier two waves.
Onus is on all to thwart a possible severe third wave of the pandemic. The economy is in such a state that another lockdown or something along similar lines will break its spine. Also we need to remind ourselves of the health sector and frontline workers who have been stretched to their limit in the last two years. Omicron will be a test of our civic responsibility towards society.
