For a world devastated by the highly virulent coronavirus for the past two years, Omicron, the new variant of the SARS-CoV2 comes as a huge jolt. With good reason the entire globe is looking at it as a variant of concern and has stepped up measures to curb its spread.
Experts believe with Omicron, the third wave of coronavirus will hit its peak in February in the country but in a much milder manner than in the second wave.
World Health Organization (WHO) Chief Scientist Dr Soumya Swaminathan on Monday said that compared to the delta variant of Covid-19, reinfections in the omicron variant — 90 days after the virus first strikes — are three times more common.
There is every reason to be concerned and it is time to step up measures to contain the havoc a third time around.
Living with Covid-19 has now become a part of life though  declining cases has brought the much needed relief as a semblance of normalcy returned. Arunachal which faced a comparatively severe second Covid wave as compared to the first is only now getting back to normal. The flat lining cases has also resulted in people lowering their guard. Covid Appropriate Behaviour and SOPs have once again fallen out of practice. The administration must once again begin reminding people to exercise the protocols which have proved effective in the earlier two waves.
Onus is on all to thwart a possible severe third wave of the pandemic. The economy is in such a state that another lockdown or something along similar lines will break its spine. Also we need to remind ourselves of the health sector and frontline workers who have been stretched to their limit in the last two years. Omicron will be a test of our civic responsibility towards society.
