ITANAGAR, Mar 5: Government run colleges and universities barring schools wore a deserted look on Monday in response to the 12-hour all higher educational institutions bandh called by All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU) in solidarity with the students of NERIST, who are agitating since last one week demanding a regular Director.
Meanwhile the protests at NERIST campus which entered its sixth day against the alleged inept attitude of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India showed no signs of relenting instead students have grown stronger in their resolve.
With no assertion coming in written form till Monday evening as assured by state BJP Chief, Tapir Gao, the agitating students have vowed to intensify protest to mount further pressure on the government.
According to NERIST source, state education Minister, Honchun Ngandam was expected to visit the institute today with an appointment letter, but could not make it to the campus due to unknown reason.
The students also rejected a letter issued to registrar, NERIST by joint secretary, MHRD which was given to students in the evening informing that the appointment of Director is under process and proposal is pending with DOPL for the approval of ACC.
Meanwhile when contacted SUN, President, B Natung expressed disappointment over delay in appointment despite seeing continuous "hullabaloo” since last one week.
“We have received too many verbal assurances and won’t bend today to easy negotiations nor accept any notices also. If the government cared about us then it should show us the appointment letter then we will stop our protest,” affirmed Natung adding that further delay would see more students joining the hunger strike.
As next phase, a peaceful silent march to Raj Bhawan on Tuesday morning from NERIST campus as to draw the attention of the governor on the issue is slated. The decision was taken today in a mass meeting held at the institution’s campus this evening.
Meanwhile the situation at NERIST campus is worsening with each passing day with another student, on relay hunger strike since Thursday today rushed to the nearest hospital after his health deteriorated.
It may be noted that the students under the aegis of SUN, NERIST have been staging relay hunger strike for the past six days and carried out many processions in past few days to seek justice.
Registrar, NERIST and Education Minister could not be contacted for their comment on the issue.
