NAMSAI, Jan 29:
The Poi-Leng festival popularly known as the Grand Chariot Festival commenced on Sunday on a religious note, which started with paying of obeisance as per Theravada Buddhist traditions to the departed monk, Saint Ven Kalyanamitta, 82 years old Bhikku, who expired on June 2 last year here at Namsai today.
The three day ritual will culminate on January 30 next. 'As per the rituals, the mortal remains of the monks are installed on an artistically designed chariot and pulled by monks and devotees on either side thus symbolising the participation in the last journey of the departed monk,' informed a local, Chow Tewa Engling .
He further added that the mortal remains are embalmed using wax and tobacco for preservation before being kept in a coffin in a makeshift traditional hut called the “Kyong-Niban” at least for three months to complete the rituals and then laid to rest.
