PASIGHAT, Mar 3:
Acting tough on the illegal hunting in and around the D. Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary (DEMWS) after prohibitory order in place, the officials on Friday intercepted 5 persons at Jopong (north side) under Borguli Range and seized animal carcass including firearms.
Informing about the arrest, DFO Wildlife, Tasang Taga said that, his team of Range Officer, Kalen Panggeng and Dy. Range Officer, Naning Perme along with other frontal staffers from Borguli Range came across the illegal hunters inside the sanctuary while on routine patrolling duties in view of ‘Unying Aaran’ festival.
Carcasses of wild boar, sambar, hog deer, porcupine and a monitor lizard were found. 3 numbers of SBBL guns with 7 live 9 used up cartridges were also seized from their possession and all of the arrested hunters were handed over to the police.
However, another hunter manage to flee and couldn’t be traced due to dwindling light, informed Taga who has appealed all sections of society to cooperate in protecting the flora & fauna of the Sanctuary.
Meanwhile, Range Officer, Sibiyamukh, Damek Koyu informed that, he has also reached out to the Gaon Burah of Sivguri village in Assam along DEMWS and Assam border village for cooperation in sensitizing against hunting inside the sanctuary. He also informed that, the villages of Namsing, Gadum, Mer and Kongkul under Mebo Sub-Division have already made village announcement “Gokying” not to let villagers hunt inside the Sanctuary as earlier times.
