PASIGHAT, Aug 21: As India celebrated its 75th year of independence, the Perme Kening welfare society (PKWS) gathered to pay tribute to three of its forefathers who valiantly fought the British during the Anglo-Abor war of 1894.
The three war heroes—Ketong Perme, Kebang Perme and Mutling Perme fought along with other members of the Adi tribe and forced the British to retreat back to Sadiya, Assam.
PKWS members congregated at Midu Liireng war memorial at Yeling-Yetek located along the Trans-Arunachal Highway in between Raneghat and Bodak under Mebo Sub-Division to pay tribute to its heroes on August 15.
Hoisting the tricolor at the war memorial, chief guest, Pelsem Tayeng recalled the contribution and great sacrifices made by the three war heroes.
The supreme sacrifices by our three PKWS forefathers contributed in compelling the British to retreat from conquering and administering the Bor Abors, the present Adi Padam of Adi tribe, he said.
With other freedom fighters from Adi community like Kengki Megu, Matmur Jamoh, Lunrung Tamuk, Lomlo Darang, Borkeng Tayeng, Kebo Tayeng, Muttum Darin etc, the contribution and fierce fighting against the British by Ketong Perme, Kebang Perme and Mutling Perme taught the British expedition team a major lesson that the Adis are hard to dominate, he added.
Speaking to mediapersons, PKWS secretary general, Litem Perme also gave a brief account of the great sacrifices made by the three war heroes from the Perme-Kening clan of the Adi tribe.
The three war heroes attacked the British base camp in and around the Yeling-Yetek area nearby the present Midu Liireng war memorial site when the British expedition was retreating after facing stiff confrontation led by freedom fighters Kengki Megu, Jongkeng Pertin and Koyi Lego from Damro village.
“It was during the time of fierce war on 4th March 1894 at Yeling-Yetek under Ayeng village area when the British suffered maximum casualties wherein the trio laid down their lives in defense of their lands. After suffering huge casualties, the British set ablaze villages like Ayeng, Mebo etc and retreated via the Siang river from Komlighat abandoning the route of Ayeng-Mebo-Siluk-Dambuk from where the Britishers had advanced,” said the general secretary.
Midu Liireng war memorial construction committee chairman, Kangkep Perme in his speech was hopeful that the war memorial will get due attention from all quarters and become a tourist attraction in the near future.
Former Mebo Banggo ZPM, Oling Perme, senior member retired ADC Ranpok Perme were among the host of attendees.
