ITANAGAR, Jan 23:In the wake of the Itanagar Market Welfare Association’s plea to the state government to direct the Legal Metrology department to issue prior notice before conducting surprise raids, the Assistant Controller Legal Metrology & CA, Papumpare District and Capital Complex, Amrit Taba said that such a move would be a mockery of the department as prior intimation to business houses will yield no result.
Expressing shock over IMWA president’s statement in local papers, Taba termed the allegations as unwarranted and asserted that the activities of the department like surprise inspection is to protect the common consumer from being cheated.
Informing that the recent raid conducted was part of its short term training programme, Taba disclosed that irregularities in several trading premises like use of non-standard weights & measures, obliteration of MRP, over pricing etc were detected and 49 cases booked under various provisions of Legal Metrology Act and Rules.
Informing that the system of measurement like Tola in gold trade, bundle in CGI sheet, etc adopted during British period is still prevalent in the state, he said that such irregularities are local in nature which needs to be regulated and completely banned as per the mandate of law.
Asserting that IMWA should support the effort of the department, Taba said that the department will continue its surprise inspection, search and seizures on weekly, fortnightly and monthly basis either by the mobile inspection team or by the local jurisdictional legal metrology officers. He also appealed to the public at large to inform or lodge complaint on toll free number 1800 345 3601 for any wrong doings.
Further informing about various initiatives, he said Mobile Inspection Team (MIT) in headquarters and zonal level have been introduced few years back but could not continue due shortage of Legal Metrology Officers (LMO).
