Itanagar, May 14: Papumpare district of Arunachal Pradesh has the highest incidence of cervical cancer in the country, while another town of the state -- Pasighat, has also been found to have high rate of cervical cancer. The alarming findings were revealed during the continuous medical education (CME) on cancer cervix screening and human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccination held on Saturday at the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) Naharlagun, wherein forty Gynaecologists from across the state participated. 
Renowned Gynae-oncologists of India Prof. Neerja Bhatla from AIIMS, New Delhi, Prof. Bhagyalaxmi Nayak from Cuttack, and Dr. Upasana Baruah, Associate Professor from BBCI, Guwahati were the resource persons. 
Expressing concern, Deputy Commissioner Capital Itanagar, Talo Potom who attended as the chief guest suggested for cervical cancer screening of the female population of the Capital Complex and Papumpare district in view of very high cases. The DC assured to provide all kind of logistic support in this endeavour while thanking all the resource persons for coming to Arunachal Pradesh. 
Dr. Moji Jini, Director, TRIHMS, Naharlagun, who attended as the guest of honour, said that such CME and workshop should be conducted more frequently so that the doctors could share, learn and refresh their knowledge and keep themselves updated with the knowledge of latest advances in the medical field. 
Prof Neeraj Bhatla from AIIMS briefed about the latest cancer cervix screening guidelines and also highlighted about the HPV vaccination. She strongly advocated that all girls between 9-20 years should receive at least one dose of HPV vaccine. 
Dr Todak Taba, Gynaecologist, TRIHMS  briefed about the cancer cervix burden in the Northeast region. He highlighted that as per statistics, Papumpare district of Arunachal Pradesh has the highest incidence of cervical cancer in the country. Another town of the State Pasighat has also high rate of incidence of Cervical Cancer which is also a matter of grave concern.
Earlier, Dr Bombei Tayeng Toko, President Itanagar Obs&Gyn Society (IOGS), while welcoming all hoped that the two day program would  help generate awareness regarding cervix cancer, its diagnosis and treatment and will also provide a platform for healthy discussion amongst the gynaecologists which would help improvise the knowledge about the latest innovations and technicalities for cervix cancer treatment.
Later in the evening, a technical session was held on Colposcopy by Dr Upasana Baruah and Ablation and Excisional Procedure by Prof Bhagyalaxmi Nayak.
Dr Goter Doke, Organising Chairman while thanking all for their participation hoped that the two days event would help in highlighting the importance of screening of cervical cancer and its early detection. He also hoped that the state government would make all efforts to make screening equipments available in all the districts of the state.
Day two of the program today witnessed an  interactive session on cervical cancer screening guidelines and workshop on Colposcopy by Prof Neeraj Bhatla, Prof Bhagyalaxmi Nayak and Prof Upasana at TRIHMS Naharlagun. Altogether, 16 patients were screened by Colposcopy out of which seven patients were treated with thermal ablation.
