KHATAN/WAKRO, Jun 17: Hundreds of Chakma origin people armed with lethal weapons on Wednesday evening attacked the indigenous local people of Khatan village under Wakro Circle of Lohit district.
A team from the Wakro police station who rushed to the spot to contain the violence was surprised to find threats flowing in from the assaulters. Speaking to the media, Officer In-charge Wakro PS Kumar informed that after receiving reports regarding encroachment of hundreds of people in their village with lethal weapons, the team rushed to the spot but was threatened by the mob of ‘dire consequences’ for the interference. We have informed the higher authority about the situation, he added.
A team of the All Mishmi Students’ Union (AMSU) also reached the spot today to measure the ground reality, informed its General Secretary Basman Yun, adding that they have been informed by the local Mishmi people that the attackers were more than a hundred in number. Interestingly, Khatan village shares boundary with the Singpho community only and the encroachment by the Chakmas have created a palpable fear amongst the local people, the AMSU GS said while demanding an immediate action against the encroachers and safety of the indigenous Mishmi people.
Meanwhile, the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ union (AAPSU) has strongly condemned the purported attempt by the illegal Chakma settlers to occupy the ancestral lands of the Mishmi community at Khatan village. Terming the act as ‘heinous’ and an ample reflection of blatant disregard for the law of the land and customary practices of the state’s people by the Chakmas, AAPSU has urged the state government and concerned district administration to view the matter seriously and arrest the culprits who created the mayhem through intimidation and firing.
“This is the result of lackadaisical attitude and lack of long-term vision by those at the helm of affairs,” the union said, while stating that it will not remain a mute spectator in case of failure by the state government to book the culprits.
The state government should immediately send a high-level ministerial team to the affected area to ascertain the exact reasons for the violence, AAPSU demanded, informing that it will also visit the area to assess the ground reality.
