NAMSAI, Feb 18:Mising Community of Namsai District celebrated their main agricultural festival, Ali-Aye Ligang with pomp and gaiety at Murong Okum (festival ground), Upper Silatoo under Lekang Circle in Namsai .

 Deputy Chief Minister, Chowna Mein while attending the festival as the Chief Guest hailed the Mising Community for proudly preserving their rich traditions and culture. He said that the indigenous festival reflects our cultural identity which we have inherited from the fore fathers. “We must continue to observe our local festivals to keep alive this identity and must transfer this legacy to the younger generations too”, he said.

 Mein while highlighting various developmental works undertaken by him in his home constituency said that massive flood protection works adopting a new technology known as Sheet Piling was done along the bank of Noa Dihing River at Silatoo which is first of its kind in the entire North East. He further directed the WRD department to expedite the remaining work and complete it before the river water rises. He also informed that many road development works are also being taken up this year.

 Responding to the memorandum submitted by the Festival Organizing Committee, Mein assured to provide fund for construction of cultural hall each at Upper Silatoo along with Entry Gate and at Mahadevpur. He also said to look into the other demands in phase wise manner.

Earlier, Mein inaugurated the newly upgraded Govt Secondary School, Silatoo. He said to provide fund for extension of 10 classrooms for the newly upgraded Secondary schools, construction of the boundary wall around the school compound and for drawing of new electricity lines to the School.

He instructed the Executive Engineer (RWD), Namsai to immediately submit the required estimates.

   Speaking in the Festival, Deputy Commissioner Namsai,   R K Sharma urged the people to come forward and take up schemes under agriculture and allied sectors like fishery, poultry and dairy development which intends to augment the farmer’s income. Citing that flood is an annual feature of the Lekang Circle, he said that the flood protection measures taken up by the Deputy Chief Minister has instilled a sense of security among the people of the area.

He further informed that the flood affected families of the year 2015-16 floods were properly rehabilitated and the district administration could run the relief camp during the flood for more than 3 months which could be possible only because of the logistic support provided by the Deputy Chief Minister, who is also the local legislator.

He also appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony which are pre-requisite for development.

On the occasion, P R Mili, SC/ST Representative, HR Executive ONGC Sivasagar, S K Patir, President Mising Dirbi Kebang also spoke on the occasion. Tabor Tali, President submitted the memorandum to DCM while Tongke Yein, Secretary Central Ali-Aye Ligang Celebration Committee 2018 highlighted the mythology of the festival.

Mein also joined in the Taku Tabat Ceremony performed during the festival to appease the god and goddesses for healthy crops and bumper harvest.
