ITANAGAR, May 19: The Human Rights Law Network (HRLN) has intensified its demand for the repeal of the Arunachal Pradesh Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, denouncing it as a draconian law that curtails fundamental human rights. The HRLN, a prominent legal advocacy group, has called for immediate action to abolish the law, citing its abusive implementation and infringement on civil liberties.
Addressing the mediapersons at the press club on Friday, Member HRLN Advocate Ebo Mili claimed that the Act has been consistently misused; with authorities employing it as a tool to suppress dissent and public voice.
"This law poses a significant threat to democratic values and civil liberties. We have witnessed a disturbing trend of individuals being arrested and detained without due process. This flagrant misuse of the law undermines the very fabric of our society. The recent arrest of various activists is a blatant misuse of this Act," he said.
HRLN is contemplating filing a petition in the National Human Rights Commission regarding the merit of the Act and the violation of basic rights of all detainees, said Mili.
Further, he stated that it is evident that the provisions outlined in the APUAPA leave room for abuse and manipulation by the State Government, enabling them to target individuals without proper safeguards or legal representation. As concerned citizens and intellectuals of Arunachal Pradesh, I believe it is our duty to condemn and discourage the use of such draconian laws, he asserted.
"This is the first time that APUAP Act has been used in such a manner. If we don’t condemn today this will encourage the state government to use it casually in every other case. That's how it has been misused by the state to keep political prisoners," Mili added.
