KHONSA, May 27: District and Sessions Judge, Khonsa today sentenced an IRBn jawan to rigorous imprisonment of two years along with a fine on charges of misbehaviour inside a police station and trying to attack the on-duty officer and other police personnel with a lethal instrument.
The said IRBn jawan named Chow Obina Manpong on August 2, 2020 went to the Diyun police station in a drunken state wearing only a half pant and vest holding a dao in his hand with the demand to meet the OC at once for lodging a complaint. While being asked to wait for a while since the OC was busy, Manpong started smoking a cigarette and even threw the packet and a lighter to the lockup where two inmates were detained. Observing the misbehaviour the on-duty police personnel restrained him and informed the matter to OC Pradip Kumar Kalita who then came out and asked the jawan the reason for coming drunk inside the police station and without uniform. During the altercation that followed Manpong attempted to hit the OC with his dao. However, as the other on-duty police personnel tried to resist to protect the OC, he directed the dao towards them and managed to flee from the PS. Finally, Manpong was apprehended after a chase followed by an FIR filed by the OC.
During the course of investigation that ended up in submission of a charge sheet it was revealed that since the last few years, Manpong was addicted to drugs besides being a habitual drinker. It further came to light that he was a habitual nuisance creator at IRBn camp and public places taking advantage of his IRBn service and had also been under departmental inquiry for indisciplined activities on several occasions in the past.
District and Sessions Judge, Khonsa H. Kashyap convicted Manpong under Sec. 447 and 353 of the IPC and sentenced him to undergo a rigorous imprisonment for two years plus a fine. DIPRO
