ITANAGAR, Feb 4:  All Nyishi Youth Association today claimed that innocent students & youths who were detained during the 36-hrs bandh were tortured by police in jail.
Speaking to reporters, ANYA President Byabang Joram claimed that students and youths who were not involved or had any connection with the association were picked-up by police and tortured.  "There are at least 45 innocent students who were detained here but transferred to Tezu District jail without any intimation to their parents. Moreover, it is surprising to see that, Police have registered more than 10 cases against each of the students," he said.
He also informed that ANYA held a meeting with parents of the arrested students and took legal recourse to clear the charges registered against them. At least 45 students and youths were released on bail from Tezu jail, Joram added while urging the state government to withdraw the charges.
He also added that ANYA will continue its movement and soon resume its 48-hr bandh call including ‘jail bharo andolan'.
Refuting any communal angle to the movement, Joram said their fight is not against a particular community but against the person who is holding the CM's chair.
Sharing the incidence of torture by police, one of the youth informed that police barged into his room and without any inquiry started kicking & punching them. "We are professional singers and I along with my friend were practicing songs when police barged into our room. We are not ANYA activist," he said.
Another youth disclosed that despite repeated clarification to police about their identity, police tortured them. One person lost his teeth, he added.
Earlier, parents of the students and youths who were in the meeting with ANYA, urged the state government to withdraw all the cases. They asserted that cases registered against innocent students will destroy their careers.
