ITANAGAR, May 7: The First Lady of Arunachal Pradesh,  Neelam Misra, on Friday visited the Research and Designing Centre, Doimukh, one of the oldest industrial centres under the Department of Textile and Handicrafts in the State. She visited different sections of the centre including weaving, embroidery, knitting, carpet making, woodcarving, carpentry and painting and interacted with the officials, craftsmen, instructors, the trainees and local weavers.
The First Lady, herself a loin loom weaver and patroniser, who has been working in a mission mode for popularizing the practice of traditional loin loom, motivated the artisans, particularly the trainees, to develop entrepreneurship and be self supporting market persons. She suggested to them to use the traditional patterns and designs of their own tribe and make all in demand items, like coats, shirts, saris and other popular garments, with difference and most importantly with Arunachali identity.
Sharing her own loin loom weaving practices and experience, the First Lady advised them to use natural fibres and colours. She also told them about usage and techniques of using natural dyes.
The First Lady appreciated the items woven by the trainees and local weavers. She urged them to return to the intricate and time-honoured weaving designs, inherent to their tribes, handed down from generation to generation.
Assistant Director, Textile, Handloom & Handicrafts, Kaman Pertin briefed the First Lady about the centre and its challenges.
