ITANAGAR, Sep 13: Affirming to fight "tooth and nail" against granting of citizenship to Chakma and Hajong, the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) has vowed to fight till the last breath to protect the indigenous tribal rights.

‘AAPSU and indigenous people of the state will never accept granting of citizenship to the Chakma –Hajong refugees on Arunachal soil. Granting of citizenship to refugees is directly an insult to the people of Arunachal and AAPSU,’ said General Secretary, Tobom Dai in a press conference today.

While questioning the role of Union Home Minister Kiren Rijiju and State government headed by Chief Minister Pema Khandu who consciously failed to save the indigenous rights of its people, Dai indicated that AAPSU will take its own ‘course of action’ against the outcomes of the high-level meeting.

Granting citizenship in Arunachal means granting all kind of political rights to the refugees; How can we accept a refugee in our state assembly whom we rejected for last many decades, questioned the General Secretary.

Dai impressed upon both the state and central government to honour the decision taken during the All-party meeting in Itanagar, wherein it was unanimously resolved to exhaust all legal means to defend and protect the interests of the indigenous tribes against the Supreme Court verdict.

“We will give befitting reply to the dictatorial attitude of the central government if the decision is not taken back”, he asserted.

Also terming the Tibetan Rehabilitation Policy 2014 as an anti-tribal policy, the Union also strongly denounced the recent cabinet decision on adopting the policy which will affect the tribal people of the state.

“We won’t accept the TRP as there are many loopholes which may adversely affect our indigenous rights. There are many clauses and guidelines in the policy which is against the indigenous rights”, Dai added.

Meanwhile, AAPSU vice-president Meje Taku slammed the political parties for playing blame game over the refugee issue.
“The present government in the state and Centre should solve the issue before blaming it on the opposition party while in power. We will show our intent if the indigenous people are affected due to blame game of the political parties,” he said.

Expressing grave concern over recent decision of state cabinet on adopting TRP 2014, Taku said the union has given one month time to the state government to rethink the matter.

“It is very bad to see the state government taking measures for the welfare of the refugees. They should take the consensus and consult the indigenous people before taking such drastic decisions,” he said.
