ITANAGAR, Feb 28:Minister Research Dr. Mohesh Chai today called for collective effort by the Research Department, Arunachal Institute of Tribal Studies, RGU and Education Department to save the indigenous language from extinction. He was chairing a brain storming consultative meeting participated by Research Department, Education Department and Arunachal Institute of Tribal Studies, RGU at JN State Museum.

Therefore, integrated road map may be designed to adopt appropriate policy for developing own script, script to be adopted in education system, to establish methodology for determining actual status of each speech community, he said adding that it is the moral duty of all Arunachalees irrespective of the department to save own identity through safe guarding indigenous language.

Invited resource person Dr. Roger Blench of Cambridge University who presently developed Mishmi script delivered an illuminating presentation on the need of development of indigenous scripts, methodology and modus operandi of its.

According to him – “Script development is the need of the hour so that next generation community members can read, learn and speak on own language and feel pride on own associate identities”.

On methodological aspect Dr. Blench suggested – “GPS marking, numbers of household, sample interview where children is speaking at home, school, market etc. detection of focus groups, interview with CBOs, language use in media, then language development strategy can be chalked”. After the field study field researchers have to analyze the sound of language with writing the sounds in International Phonetic Alphabet for undertaking phonetic analysis.

The presentation is most pertinent and beneficial when the Philological Section of Research Department has undertaken state wide linguistic survey.

 Secretary Research, Dani Salu emphasized to prepare common list of speech community of the state and priority sector for the development of indigenous languages. He also pointed out on the need of technical training for field Research Officers to accomplish the work successfully.

 The consultative meeting produced some policy recommendations to put forward to the Government aiming the objectives and the technical session chaired by Research Director Batem Pertin.
