GUWAHATI, Jul 31: The curtain-raiser to the ‘Bailey Trail Trek and Mt. Gorichen Expedition’ scheduled in Arunachal Pradesh during Sep-Oct 2021 was organised today here at the R G Baruah Sports Complex of Nehru Stadium in the form of a press meet.
Initiated by Padma Shree Dr Anshu Jamsenpa, the two national adventure events will see high-altitude trekkers and seasoned mountaineers joining in from different corners of India. Dr Anshu stated that around 80 local youths will be engaged and trained ahead of the events which will help them in getting employed as trainers, trekking guides, camp leaders, porters and cooks. While stating that adventure tourism has a huge scope which should be explored by the state’s youths, she thanked the Union Ministry of Tourism and Department of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of Arunachal Pradesh and Arunachal Tourism for their support and encouragement.
Launching a dedicated website www.baileytrail.com on the occasion, Adviser of the trekking events Brigadier S Prasad informed that Bailey Trail is a historic route taken by Lt. Col. F.M. Bailey who was a British Political Officer. Col. Bailey trekked from Bomdila to Tawang via Chander, Thungri, Changla, Potok, Lurtem, Mago and Jang with altitudes touching 15500 ft above the sea level and the same route was used by both the Indian and Chinese armies during the 1962 Indo-China war. For the Mt. Gorichen Expedition, the Indian Army would also go all out in facilitating the mountain expeditions in Arunachal Himalayas including rescue operations as and when required, Brigadier S Prasad said. As the world pushes to recover from the pandemic, Dr Anshu’s bold initiative to revive, sustain and promote adventure tourism in Arunachal Pradesh couldn’t have come at a better time, he added.
President, Arunachal Mountaineering & Adventure Sports Association (AMASA) Tsering Wange informed that Dr Anshu who holds a Guinness World Record in mountaineering will lead the Mt Gorichen Expedition and Everester Nima Lama will be the leader of the Bailey trail treks, adding that all health regulations and Covid SOPs will be strictly followed for the safety of the organisers and participants.  A part of the proceeds from the event will be donated to Covid-19 Relief Fund, the AMASA President informed. 
Assistant Director, Union Ministry of Tourism R S Paswan congratulated the core team members of the events which included Everester Nima Lama, Master Chef Amitabh Dutta and Adventurers Hemen Borah and Kukil Saikia for the bold initiative to revive the adventure tourism industry in Arunachal Pradesh from the ill effects of Covid pandemic.
