NAHARLAGUN, Jun 15: The state administration’s ongoing efforts to eradicate the menace of drugs from the capital gave further results with the arrest of an APP constable and six others under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NPDS) Act.
The arrested personnel has been identified as constable Chillong Techi who was posted at Women Police Station, Itanagar. The other accused are Joram Agung, Dani Kamo, Monika Chetry, Taksingh Chetry, Putukan Hazarika and Diganta Gogoi alias Diggu Bhai. “On June 13 at around 11:40 am, a police team led by Naharlagun SDPO Dekio Gumja found constable Chillong Techi, Joram Agung and Dani Kamo in Naharlagun area engaged in consuming and peddling contrabands, suspected to be heroin,”  informed Superintendent of Police, Capital Region Jimmy Chiram while addressing the reporters. During interrogation it was revealed that the constable procured the drugs from one Diggu Bhai, residing in Banderdewa and sold them to various addicts in the capital region, the SP shared, adding that profit from the transactions was used by the constable to sustain his addiction.
Naharlagun police with the help of their Banderdewa counterpart arrested Monika Chetry, Taksingh Chetry, Putukan Hazarika and Diganto Gogoi and seized 68.24 grams of suspected heroin. A case (No. 96/2021 under sections 21(b) and 27(a) of the NDPS Act) has been registered at the Naharlagun PS and further investigation is underway, the SP informed. Elaborating on the efforts to make the state capital drugs free, the SP said that APP has increased the actions against the menace which is clearly seen from the numbers of drug cases registered since 2019 by forming special teams led by SDPO of the concern sub-division and all OCs and team members of police stations. Intelligence sources engaged in gathering information on drug addicts and their procurement routes have been activated and all entry points including river side and jungle routes from where the contrabands can enter the state have also been kept under vigil for quick sharing of information on suspicious activities, the SP informed.

“Police personnel are being motivated to remain vigilant and tackle the drug-related cases in a successful and systematic way so that after a case is registered, proper investigation is initiated leading to delivery of justice,” the SP stated while appealing the denizens, students, NGOs and all stakeholders to cooperate with the police in the war against drugs by providing any information they happen to come across. He also appealed to the addicted individuals to come forward and surrender as consuming drugs by itself is also a crime.
“The department will take equal and strict action against any police personnel involved in drug trafficking like any others,” the SP reiterated, when asked about the reasons for the state's police personnel being arrested in drug trafficking cases in increasing numbers.
