ITANAGAR, Sep 19: Stepping up the pressure against Chakma- Hajong refugee citizenship rights, All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union’ (AAPSU) today urged the state government to call a Special Assembly Session and to adopt a resolution against the Supreme Court order, failing which it has threatened to resort non-cooperation movement against the Centre.

Referring to the Tamil Nadu government, which had passed a bill in the state assembly that overturned the Supreme Court ban on the bull-taming sport Jalikattu, the Union asserted that the same can be done in the Arunachal on the citizenship issue.

‘We will boycott every Government of India offices even there will be restriction on plying of vehicles that belongs to Government of India if our demand is not fulfilled within stipulated time frame,’ said President AAPSU, Hawa Bagang while addressing a press conference today after the bandh.

‘If the Centre does not heed to the demands of the indigenous people then tough times are ahead for the Indian Government,’ he added.

Claiming Tuesday’s state-wide bandh as a major success, Bagang asserted that the people of Arunachal have whole-heartedly supported the bandh not only in the capital but all across the state.

Further questioning the role of the state’s parliamentarians, the AAPSU President took a jibe saying ‘they are louder only in the media but in reality they don’t want to speak categorically on deportation of refugees from Arunachal.’

‘Chakma-Hajong are not part of this indigenous land and on humanitarian ground they can be provided citizenship of India but they have to be deported from Arunachal soil which is the sole responsible of central government,’ he said.

Also questioning the role of the state government on the vexed issue, General Secretary AAPSU, Tobom Dai has demanded immediate placement of one-point resolution taken during the All Party Meeting where in unison all present had rejected granting of citizenship to refugees in Arunachal. Why has that resolution not been submitted to the Centre yet, questioned the Union.

Further appealing the people to cooperate with AAPSU in the fight against refugees, Dai also regretted the inconvenience caused to the general public due to the bandh.
