Eastern Sentinel Arunachal News

Many in the know of things had predicted that the onset of winter will be an especially difficult phase for Arunachal Pradesh in the fight against covid-19. And as the temperatures are dipping, our worst fears are being realised. The state has reached the grim milestone of 54 deaths, with three deaths occuring in the intervening night of November 28-29.

The state on Sunday lost its fourth healthcare worker to Covid-19, in the line of duty. The 27-year-old Laboratory Technician is probably the youngest in the state to succumb to the novel virus. She was actively engaged in covid duties at Dirak Checkgate in Namsai since May.

The coronavirus is not just a deadly virus but it is especially traumatizing as it robs people from saying their final goodbyes to their loved ones... Given the highly unpredictable nature of this novel virus, it is imperative that people understand its deadly nature and adhere to laid down standard operating procedures.

The Itanagar Capital Region was exemplary at the beginning of the pandemic; the support of civilians in combating the virus' spread was near textbook example. Businesses ensured temperature checks, sanitizing hands, mandatory use of face mask.. all that when the state had near zero deaths and low positive caseload of Covid-19. Fast forward to November, eight month's into the biggest pandemic, all care has mostly dissipated. The general mood is of nonchalance. This, when covid-19 fatalities are being reported regularly and severe cases increasing.

With an effective vaccine supposed to be available in the first few months of the New Year 2021, good sense must prevail. It's a matter of a few more month's, until then following SOPs will make all the difference between life and death.
