ITANAGAR, Jul 5:  After more than 19 hours of search and rescue operation, the wreckage of the Indian Air Force helicopter that had gone missing while on a flood rescue operation in between Nyorch and Hostallam area  of Papumpare district on Tuesday evening , was spotted on Wednesday in  an inaccessible deep gorge at Sopo Yuha area some 4km from Hostallam today. 

Bodies of two persons have been found in the crash site however two more bodies are yet to be retrieved.Speaking to media, Superintendent of Police, Papumpare Tumme Amo  informed  that after much effort done by two rescue teams, one headed by DSP, Yupia Neelam Nega from Nyorch and  another by him from Hostallam along with local  villagers and paramilitary forces the wreckage was located in a deep gorge  in Sopo area.

‘The body of one person has been identified as PK Singh who is a Squadron in the Air force and the other body (in civil dress) is yet to be identified,’ he said.

The SP further said that bodies of the other two people who were on board are yet to be retrieved. There were three crew members and one IRBN personnel.  

“Our team has searched a 50 yard area to find out the  other two bodies but  couldn’t  retrieve them,’ added Amo while informing that  Wing Commander  Captain Dhillon, Squadron Gujjar , Squadron PK Singh  and one Nada Obing were on board.

However due to bad weather and night approaching the bodies of the two deceased couldn’t be brought back to the top till this evening. So the rescue team comprising of the Army, Air force, ITBP, IRBN, NDRF and SDRF including local guide will leave for the located spot at Sopo Yuha at first light on Thursday to make an attempt  to retrieve the remaining bodies.

 

Boosting the team’s morale, the SP asserted that this search operation was one of the fastest in such cases in recent times.
