Khonsa, Mar 22: The Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) Tirap, in collaboration with four Gram Panchayats, observed World Water Day in a unique and impactful manner. The day was celebrated at the Tepham stream, a crucial water source providing drinking water supply to four villages - Chasa, Noksa, Old Pani Duria, and Longo village.
The objective of commemorating World Water Day near the water source was to focus on the importance of maintaining clean headworks and Water Treatment Plants (WTP). The planned activities included the construction of check dams and pits in the upstream area of the water source. Unfortunately, due to heavy rainfall and inclement weather conditions, the construction of these structures was not feasible on the day of the event.
During the event, Wiram Matey, the Zila Parishad Member of Kapu, highlighted the critical significance of protecting catchment areas and emphasized the roles of Panchayat Raj Institution (PRI) members and village chiefs in conserving water sources.
Bharat Sonam, Executive Engineer of PHED Khonsa provided insights into the objectives of World Water Day, stressing the need to create awareness about the importance of freshwater sources and advocating for sustainable water management. He drew attention to the water scarcity challenges in the Tirap (TCL) region and urged participants to recognize the vital role of water in all aspects of life, essential for maintaining ecological balance. The event concluded with the successful cleaning of the headwork by the dedicated team.
